Bicycles, Travel, and Photography
88 Bikes is a non-profit organization that specializes in bringing bicycles to children living in orphanges around the world. I first heard about the organization in 2008 when they were collecting funds to deliver 120 bicycles to orphans living high in the Andes Mountains near Huancayo, Peru. I donated funds for bicycle #64/ In addition to the funds, they request a photo to give to the child receiving the bike you donated.
The founders Dan, Nick and Jared write about a recent endeavor.
“There are 27 million slaves in the world today, many of them children. For kids rescued from slavery, their journey toward independence and healing is
arduous. This year, 88bikes honors the heroism of these children by launching a multi-country endowment. In early 2010, 88bikes will travel to Ghana, India, Nepal and Vietnam, endowing orphanages, ashrams, centers and schools sheltering children rescued from human trafficking. The Moment of Happy will occur in January, 2010 at more than a dozen sites throughout the world. 300+ children will receive a bicycle and the training to maintain it.”
In early April, 88 Bikes announced that they had delivered the bikes to children in those 4 countries and that a news piece about their work appeared on CBS Evening News: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=6296309n&tag=related;photovideo
You can support this organization. A donation of $88 buys one bike.
